The Chicken
It's become a tradition at Common Wheel that when people leave they get a gift made of scrap bike parts. This sculpture was made for Trustee Judith Foster. Judith had been more than just treasurer, she'd been doing a great deal of administration for ten years and had been instrumental in setting up our climbing project. At the time of writing (December 2022) she is still on the board.
Judith likes chickens and kept them as pets so we decided to make her a chicken. After a bit more thought we decided to make it double sided, low relief and garden sized. It's been left in natural metal and will weather and rust to brown, a good colour for a hen.
The chicken was made by bike volunteer Martin Bogie and Neil McDonald, Workshop supervisor. Martin did most of the detail design. His best touch was fitting the legs so it looks like its running, adding animation. Neil did the welding, and it's better welded than most art.
