Handlebars come in many shapes.
The straight bar is very popular nowadays, but it's not really comfortable. Before 1985 they were not made, as the grip position is un-natural. Gripping a straight bar puts your forearms under stress, and makes you unhappy and aggressive, as this picture shows.

If you can't get comfortable on your hybrid or mountainbike, it's because the bar is the wrong shape. It's usually straightforward and fairly cheap to fit a different bar to a hybrid or mountainbike, though sometimes longer cables are needed.
